Expert Group Meeting on the Impact of Climate Change on ASEAN Food Security

The OML Center Scientific Director, Dr. Rodel Lasco and Researcher, Ms. Rafaela Jane Delfino attended the Expert Group Meeting on the Impact of Climate Change on ASEAN Food Security which provided a forum for experts to share assessments on how climate change will affect food security at future thinking horizons. It aimed to (1) determine the climate change scenarios that are most likely to impact on the food security ecosystem in ASEAN, recognizing the inter-connectedness between geographic regions for food trade; and (2) identify possible strategies that would facilitate a mapping of the drivers that affect food security.

It was organized by the RSIS Centre for Non-Traditional Security (NTS) Studies Centre of Nanyang Technological University – one of Singapore’s top universities. Experts from the academe, government agencies and private sector of ASEAN member countries were also present during the meeting. The expert group meeting was held on 6-7 June 2013 at the Crowne Plaza, Ortigas, Pasig City, Philippines.

Food security and climate change is one of the focal areas for research of the OML Center.  The Center recognizes that agriculture, one of the major sources of livelihood, is one of the most vulnerable sectors to climate change and climate-related disasters in the country.
