The OML Center took part at the 2nd National Mangrove Conference held last 1-2 September 2015 at MO2 Westown Hotel in Iloilo City. The event is organized by the Zoological Society of London (ZSL).
With the theme “Sharing experiences and lessons on post-Yolanda mangrove recovery work,” the conference gathered people from the academe, government agencies, LGUs, CSOs,POs and humanitarian organizations who made contributions on mangrove management and recovery. Specifically, the event aimed to: 1.) share results and lessons from implementing major rehabilitation programs; 2.) assess post-typhoon disaster mangrove damage and recovery; 3.) share experiences and lessons on the importance of mangroves in building coastal resilience and adaptation to climate change; and 4.) revisit mangrove rehabilitation strategies in the context of post-disaster humanitarian assistance.
OML Center’s Mr. Carlo Carlos served as a resource person and presented “An Impact Assessment of Typhoon Yolanda in Leyte and Eastern Samar.” The presentation highlighted the impacts and recovery of Yolanda-affected areas. He also shared prospective impacts of typhoons as documented in other countries.
A workshop was also held, addressing recurring issues, success stories, and recommendations on mangrove management on the following areas: biophysical, socio-economic and governance. The ideas shared by the participants were then integrated to formulate a call for action.ZSL’s Chief Scientific Advisor, Dr. Jurgenne Primavera closed the event, with the participants agreeing to a call on applying evidence-based principles and practices on mangrove rehabilitation and management programs.
