CLIMATE-RELATED RISKS AND DISASTERS

RATIONALE

The Philippines is one of the most disaster-prone countries in the world much of this because of climate related hazards. It lies along the Western Pacific Basin– a generator of climatic conditions such as monsoons, thunderstorms, inter-tropical convergence zone (ITCZ), typhoons, among others. An average of 20 tropical cyclones crosses its boundaries annually, nine of which makes a landfall. Not surprisingly, the country is also highly vulnerable to climate change.

Science is essential to understanding climate change, its impacts to our people and ecosystems, and how we can adapt to them. The conference provides a forum where Filipino scientists can meet regularly to share and discuss their findings. The first conference in 2012 was a huge success with scientists from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao actively participating various sessions.

 

OBJECTIVES   

In general, the conference aims to discuss, develop, and promote response to climate–related risks and disasters. Specifically the conference aims to:

1. provide a venue for sharing of scientific results and findings;
2. identify priority research and development agenda;
3. discuss policy implications of research outputs; and
4. identify key messages for communication materials.

EXPECTED OUTPUTS

The conference is expected to produce the following:

1. Resolutions that will be given to concerned government agencies, including Office of the President, Senate of the Philippines, and House of Representatives.
2. Published proceedings
3. Research and Development Agenda
4. Policy Actions
5. Science-Policy Brief

CALL FOR PAPERS FOR THE SCIENTIFIC SESSIONS

Papers for the Scientific Sessions following the conference theme “CLIMATE-RELATED RISKS AND DISASTERS” in the following topics are invited to become a paper or poster presenter during the conference.

– Climate trends and implications to DRR

– Increasing risk and exposure in landscapes, seascapes, and vulnerable sectors (IPs, minority, urban poor)

– Demography and migration

– Urban growth, building urban centers/ resiliency

– Community-based disaster response

– Available technologies and communication tools

-Early warning systems

– Lessons from Ondoy, Habagat, Pablo, Yolanda etc

 

AUTHORS ARE REQUESTED TO SUBMIT THEIR ABSTRACTS at 2014climateconferenceabstract@gmail.comNOT LATER THAN JULY 31, 2014. ABSTRACTS SUBMITTED IN ANY OTHER MANNER SHALL NOT BE ACCEPTED.

 

Please follow the Format specified below:

·          Typewritten in a 6” x 9” paper size with margins:  Top and Bottom = 1 inch and Right and Left = 0.75 inch

·          Font type – use Times New Roman

·          Title (centered, bold, upper and lower case, font size: 12)

·          Author(s) (centered, upper and lower case, font size: 11); authors should use first full names;                underline presenting author; indicate with asterisk corresponding author, and use bold face for                the main/major author.

·          Affiliation and address (centered in upper and lower case, font size: 10); if authors come from                different institutions indicate with superscripts respective affiliations. Address should be                        sufficient to enable interested parties to contact authors; including telephone, fax, and e-mail.

·          Abstract body (justified, font size: 11)

·          Keywords (justified in lower case)

·          Submit file in Word format

 

Guidelines in preparing extended abstracts: 

1.           Abstract should contain no more than 300 words, no figures, and no tables included.

2.           Uncommon acronyms should be spelled out the first time they are used; if several acronyms               are used, list them with their meanings at the end of abstract.

3.           Provide at least five keywords.

4.           Do not list references in abstract text or body.

 

Abstracts, which do not follow above format/guidelines, will be returned automatically to authors.

Authors of accepted/rejected abstracts will be notified via email starting AUGUST 15, 2014 and will be given further instructions on poster presentation. Please note that traditional poster shall be the standard entries to the Third National Climate Conference Poster Session. May we also request for a copy of your respective office logo (if there’s any, otherwise we will use the old logo) for the layouting of the flyer.

Deadline of your comments/ submission of logo is on Friday (May16). We hope to disseminate the flyer in time for the NAST pre-ASM conference on May 29.
