The OML Center concluded the “Evidence-based Rehabilitation Study of Yolanda-affected Areas” through a series of presentations and turn-over of results and information materials to the local government units (LGU) and other stakeholders. The presentations were held in Tacloban City and Municipality of Palo, Leyte last 23 February; Ormoc City and Kananga on 24 February, and; General MacArthur and Quinapondan in Eastern Samar on 26 February. The presentations were attended by representatives from the key local government units, non-government/people’s organizations and barangay officials. The objective of the study is to provide scientific inputs to the national and local government agencies in the restoration and improvement of settlements, facilities, livelihood and ecosystems, and in reducing disaster risks in local communities.
The study was divided in two components: Vulnerability Assessment and Land Use Planning Management (VA-LUPM), and Ecosystems Rehabilitation and Management (ERM). The VA-LUPM is composed by the team of Luigi Toda, Justine Ravi Orduña and Carlos Manuel Tito Santos. The first component aimed to provide guidance and policy recommendations for the local governments of Tacloban City, Palo, Ormoc City and Kananga in developing future development plans. The ERM component focused particularly on mangrove rehabilitation and evaluated the role of coastal vegetation in protecting nearby communities from storm surges brought about by typhoons. The ERM team is composed of Rafaela Jane Delfino, Carlo Carlos, Dr. Laura David and Dr. Drandreb Earl Juanico.
Science-policy briefs, maps and infographics were likewise turned over to the LGUs and other stakeholders for their guidance and perusal in developing future management plans and other related activities.
OML Center’s Scientific Director Dr. Rodel D. Lasco expressed his gratitude to the assistance and information provided by the LGUs and other stakeholders which brought about the results of the study. He further stressed out that their support will not only help their respective towns but may potentially help other countries in being prepared from such disasters.
