Project: Forest Carbon Stock and Adaptation

Background

The researcher will implement and monitor our focused research project on Bicol, which focuses on developing a forest carbon stock inventory and community resilience. The study is to produce a guideline for a best-practice remote sensing approach for the application of LiDAR in delivering accurate forest biomass estimates to meet carbon accounting requirements while developing community resilience to risks and hazards that are present in the area.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Review and synthesize literature and studies related to conservation of carbon stocks, sustainable forest management, and community resilience.
• Produce allometric models in estimating carbon stock and biomass with guidance from project research fellow
• Liaise, assist and coordinate with the project team, research fellows, government agencies and other groups in the execution of project activities
• Handle Geographic Information Systems (GIS) activities and spatial analyses, such as but not limited to utilizing and extracting various information from satellite and aerial imageries, digitizing, geo-referencing and map generation
• Conduct key informant interviews and focused group discussions with local communities
• Prepare progress and technical reports based on the outputs of the project
• Produce scientific publications and other knowledge products such as but not limited to journal articles, science-policy briefs, technical papers and reports
• Perform all other project-related duties that may be assigned from time to time

Qualifications

• College graduate, preferably graduate level with background in geodesy and forestry, or any related field with basic knowledge and understanding of ecology and environmental studies
• With strong technical background in forestry, GIS, and climate hazard risk-related topics
• Proficient in using GIS software applications and other mapping tools
• With background in academic research and tree allometry an advantage
• With experience in ground survey methods and GPS handling preferred
• Good technical writing skills or experienced in writing scientific papers and reports
• With good leadership skills, able to work independently (with minimum supervision), able to work simultaneously on numerous tasks and meet deadlines
• Fit to travel and do field work
