OMLC Scientific Director presented a poster at the IPCC Expert Meeting in Dublin

The OML Center, Scientific Director, Dr. Rodel D. Lasco presented a poster at the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Expert Meeting on Climate Change, Food and Agriculture in Dublin, Ireland on May 27-29, 2015. The poster summarizes a study that demonstrated the use of flood inundation mapping with LiDAR and GIS to map appropriate rice cultivation areas in Apalit, Pampanga. Aside from useful maps, the study also provides recommended measures to aid farmers and other relevant stakeholders in cropping activities and increasing rice yield, as well as in the development of flood-resilient crop varieties.

The Expert Meeting

The Meeting considered the assessment across the IPCC Fifth Assessment Report (AR5), as well as the most compelling new research since the publication of the AR5. Participants drawn from around the world discussed options for future IPCC work.

Combining presentations and discussion sessions, the meeting addressed food production and food security in a changing climate, including climate change risks for food production and interactions with mitigation, adaptation, and development. It examined land-use trends and non-production aspects of food security, including future demand for food and post-harvest components of food systems. It also examined policy responses, including mitigation and adaptation options with the potential to enhance food security or create competition for land and water.

IPCC Activities

One of the main IPCC activities is the preparation of comprehensive Assessment Reports about the state of scientific, technical and socio-economic knowledge on climate change, its causes, potential impacts and response strategies. The IPCC also produces Special Reports, which are an assessment on a specific issue and Methodology Reports, which provide practical guidelines for the preparation of greenhouse gas inventories.

Since its inception in 1988 the IPCC has prepared five multivolume assessment reports. The Fifth Assessment Report was released between September 2013 and November 2014.
