OMLC Project Leaders, Glenn S. Banaguas and Dr. Damasa Magcale-Macandog are 2014 NAST Awardees

OMLC’s project leaders Glenn S. Banaguas, of De La Salle Araneta University, and Dr. Damasa Magcale-Macandog of University of the Philippines, Los Banos are recipients of the National Academy of Science and Technology in the Philippines (NAST Phil) 2014 Outstanding Young Scientist (OYS) Awards and NAST Environmental Science Award respectively.

The awarding ceremony was held at the NAST 36th Annual Scientific Meeting last July 9-10, 2014, Philippine International Convention Center, Pasay City.

Glenn S. Banaguas is the project leader of OMLC’s funded project Impact and Risk Analyses of Climate Variability on Food and Environmental Security in Tarlac Province, he is recognized for his valuable contribution in the field of Environmental Management, for his significant researches on climate change related impacts, risks and hazards through scientific methods. He also established the Environmental and Climate Change Research Institute of DLSAU where he recruited a pool of Junior Research Scientists composed of young undergraduate students. Their researches have been recognized by the science communities and published on peer reviewed journals.

Dr. Damasa Magcale-Macandog on the other hand, is the recipient of the NAST Environmental Science Award. She is one of of the project leaders of OMLC’s Funded Project Agent-based Modeling (ABM) of sustainable livelihoods for vulnerable people to adapt to the impacts of flood-related landslides in the Philippines. Dr. Magcale-Macandog is recognized for her research program addressing the Laguna Lake ecosystem environmental issues and problems particularly on its degraded watershed. This is to ensure the preservation and sustainability of ecosystem services and biodiversity of the Lake. Her multidimensional and multidisciplinary research program generated strategies and approaches which are useful in improving the Laguna Lake watershed in various aspects (such as policy, environmental quality, food security, etc.,)
