The OML Center visited the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in Los Banos, Laguna last July 15, 2015.
Ms. Corinta Guerta, Director for External Relations of IRRI, together with other IRRI staff welcomed Dr. Rodel Lasco, Scientific Director of OML Center, and his staff to the IRRI headquarters to discuss possible collaborative opportunities between IRRI-NextGen rice project and the Center.
The NextGen rice project is an initiative under the Food Staples Sufficiency Program (FSSP) of the Philippine Department of Agriculture (DA). It aims to use recent advances in plant breeding, such as the use of molecular biology, stratified multi-environmental testing (MET), and improved computational power to make the country’s rice breeding program more efficient.
The possible partnership aims to promote both IRRI’s and the Center’s goal to provide communities, especially farmers, resilient rice varieties to protect rice productivity and maintain food security in the midst of the changing climate.
As part of the visit, the OML Center was toured around the RiceWorld Museum and Learning Center, and the International Rice Genebank. To know more about IRRI and their projects, visit their site here.
