With the main objective of delivering up-to-date, accurate, and detailed weather information to support the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) in serving the nation, a mobile weather app for the Philippines was developed and now available in Apple App Store and Google Play. This app called Weather UP! is the first of its kind to ever harness the information from crowd-sourced weather observations to correct forecast errors and enhance succeeding forecasts.

More About Weather Up!

Weather prediction can be significantly useful for short-term planning and decision-making. However, a lot of factors influence what happens in different areas on a given time of the day, therefore affecting weather forecast detail and accuracy. Developer, Dr. Gerry Bagtasa,  recognizes the need for further developments in the field of meteorology and so devised Weather UP! “Unlike any other weather app available, Weather UP! shows you highly localized weather forecasts that extend to five days in advance, and updated with the latest available weather data four times a day,” shared Dr. Bagtasa.

Weather UP! is a user-friendly app that provides a five-day extended forecast and meteorological data (heat index, relative humidity, rain, wind speed, and wind direction) suited to local conditions, while allowing its audience to participate in weather forecast improvement through quick submission of local weather observations.This mobile app is a product of a project called Weather and Hazard Alert and Tracking System for Urban Areas in the Philippines (WHATSUP) funded by the OML Center and a collaborative research program of different institutes and departments of the University of the Philippines (UP), Diliman. According to Dr. Bagtasa, it is the goal of this project to make the Filipino people more astute to weather forecasting, thus engaging them in a long term through the feedback mechanism.

About the App Developer

The app is developed and run by Dr Bagtasa, an Atmospheric Physicists from the Institute of Environmental Science and Meteorology of UP Diliman and team member of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Project NOAH. He received his doctorate degree in the field of atmospheric physics/atmospheric remote sensing in Chiba University, Japan. Before that, he got his bachelor and masters degree, both major in physics, from De La Salle University Manila, Philippines.
