In support of the Open Data Philippines effort, Readysaster is organized to solicit innovative ideas from developers, data geeks and designers and provide a venue where they can collaborate to create a mobile app that can assist communities on quickly and efficiently responding to natural disasters. The event will be held at Palet Express on May 10-11, 2014.

Readysaster Hack in Manila is part of a global initiative called Code for Resilience by World Bank’s Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR). It aims to build communities’ resilience to natural Disasters through innovative uses of information and communication technologies (ICTs).

WhatAbouts

Readysaster: Hack for Resilience aims to create innovative and context-based solutions to Disaster Risk Management (DRM) challenges using ICTs, based on open data provided by partner government agencies which can help the government, citizens and civil society organizations in preparing and reducing the risks of natural disasters in the country.

Workshops will run during the hackathon to help participants understand more about open data and processes on using ICTs.

Registration

Developers, designers, data gurus, disaster experts and ordinary citizens – practically anyone interested can participate in the hackathon. Entrance is FREE, but registration is required. Just go to this LINK.

Mechanics

·         There are no rules for the hackathon. Participants are free to do their own thing as long as they meet the purpose for the app creation.

·         Participants can come with ideas already formed, or they could create it during the event, based on the things they will learn from the workshops.

·         There are no rules for the number of people, but it is recommended to have at least 3-4 members per team. Individual participants could also come at the event and formulate teams during the hackathon.

·         Lastly, participants should bring a laptop and extra shirts. Food and drinks will be provided during the event.

·         Awards will be given based on the criteria that the apps met at the end of the hackathon period. These are Readysaster Grand Prize,Help the Government (Special Award), Inclusive Technology (Special Award) and the Student Special Award.

More details

Developers will own the credit for the apps and the visualizations of the hackathon. However, in the spirit of openness, usage of the GNU: General Public License is highly encouraged.
